Burch&Co is made up of brilliant, caring and unique individuals. Each member of the team brings their own perspective and passions to their role. Collectively, we are united in our human-centred approach to law.

The Meet the Team series aims to shine a light on the wonderful humans that make up Burch&Co. In this instalment, get to know our Commercial and Corporate Associate, Sam.

What made you want to get into practising law?

Since I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer. This desire stemmed from the enjoyment I got out of winning an argument against my brother and sister, and my otherwise innate problem-solving skills. I’ve been able to utilise my law and commerce degrees across my professional career, practicing in a broad array of areas, including tax law, disputes and resolution, and now corporate and commercial law.

What does your typical day look like?

No two days are the same at Burch&Co. Working across two different practice areas exposes me to a wide range of clients and different work streams. I’m able to work on complex M&A projects, and also assist our biggest clients with their day-to-day legal needs. Whether it’s reviewing a lease as part of a broader transaction, or drafting long form documents, my corporate and commercial law experience has exposed me to lots of different people and different types of work, which in turn allows me to maximise my contribution to the Burch&Co team.

What do you love most about working with Burch&Co?

Burch&Co is different to anywhere I’ve worked before. The fact that I choose to work from the office almost every day (when we’re only required to be in the office one day per week) speaks volumes about the collaborative working culture that we have. Practising at Burch&Co allows me to experience the culture and values I’d expect from a boutique law firm, while at the same time being able to advance my career in a fast-paced environment. I thoroughly enjoy working with everyone in the team and it’s comforting to know that we are all aligned in our common goal of creating the best working environment that we can.

What do you expect will dominate corporate deal-making this year?

I don’t think anything will necessarily ‘dominate’ deal-making this year, but I expect to see increased deal volume as market stability returns. With interest rate cuts expected to occur in the back half of this year, I would expect a significant amount of capital to be deployed across the M&A industry, causing an uptick in the number of deals.

What inspires you?

I find inspiration from many different parts of my life – whether it’s watching my wife raise our two-year old son while being pregnant with our second child, or seeing my colleagues provide our client community with an empathetic, caring and quality driven service. These areas of my life provide me with the drive to be the best person I can be and to maximise the value that I can create during each day.

What do you love to do outside of work?

Balancing my interests outside of work with my work life is very important to me, and a key reason why I’m able to succeed in both aspects of my life. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my young family, going for a run with friends, watching sport and eating well.
